If you are new to the concept of Brazilian cheese buns, you might want to test this recipe. This recipe was inspired by a classic, but with a modern-day twist.
What are Brazilian buns?
Brazilian cheese buns are cheese bread, made from some simple ingredients like tapioca flour, milk, cheese, salt, and oil. The way in which they are created and baked, leave you with delicious yet gluten and grain-free and low-on-carbs buns.
Why use tapioca flour?
The yucca root is the plant that is cultivated to extract cassava flour. It is native to South America and the Caribbean region. This flour is refined to extract the pulp or tapioca. Over the past few years, both the tapioca and cassava flour have risen in popularity, because lots of people are finding gluten and grains to be hard to digest, or they can cause some intestinal upset. Diets that do not contain grains are fairly popular, and these flours are great alternatives when baking.
Tapioca flour will thicken any liquid that it is placed in, and it is a great replacement for cornstarch. What is more, this flour has been often times used in the preparation process of these buns.
Can these buns be dairy-free?
They can. We have provided one of our favorite dairy-free and vegan cheese options below, and we have tested this recipe with both dairy-free/vegan shredded cheese, and mozzarella, just to make sure that your cheesy dreams come true.
Why are these Brazilian buns the perfect snack?
As far as nutritional values are concerned, tapioca flour is pretty bland, because it is low on proteins, fat, and calories, and because of its processing, it has been stripped of many nutrients. But, this does not mean that you cannot create some healthy recipes with it.
This flour is grain-free, gluten-free and nut-free, which are properties that make it a great base for baking. It is also extremely versatile, and you can add some other healthy ingredients that can raise the nutritional value of the meal that you are cooking.
You can, for example, add chia, matcha, flax, pureed sweet potato, fruits, pureed spinach, and some other nutrient-dense foods to these buns, in order to create something that is allergy-free and healthy.
These buns contain cheese, which is a great source of vitamin B12, zinc, selenium, calcium and many other nutrients and minerals. Eggs also contain nutrients that are really important, such as choline, which is important for the overall health of our brain.
- One egg
- 1/3 cup of avocado or olive oil
- Two-thirds a cup of milk of your choice (almond milk is our recommendation)
- One and a half cup of tapioca flour
- One teaspoon of salt
- One teaspoon of garlic powder
- Half a teaspoon of Italian herb blend
- Three quarters a cup of mozzarella cheese, or vegan cheese
- Half a cup of marinara sauce
- Coconut oil for the muffin tray
How to prepare it:
You will need to preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and coat the muffin liners with a thin layer of coconut oil. Add all of the ingredients, with the exception of the marinara sauce, in a high powered blender, and then blend the ingredients together, until you get a homogenous mixture. After that, pour the mixture into the muffin tray, until it is three-quarters full. Take one teaspoon and then add a small amount (about half of teaspoon) to the top of the batter, and then swirl it around.
Bake the mixture for 20-25 minutes, and then serve it dipped in marinara sauce.
