It’s summertime, so it is time to relax a bit, right? Not for everyone. More than 50% of Americans don’t use all of their vacation days. Even though taking time off is the key to replenishing your energy and being more productive, many people don’t take time to rest.
According to a survey, most people acknowledge the fact that they need to take some time off and relax.
Also, 45% of the workers who participated in this survey agreed that taking some time to rest can improve their mental health and help them replenish their energy. But, they simply can’t break free from the incessant demands of the office.
And summer is the best time of the year to take a day off.
Why We Need To Replenish Our Energy
The more you work without taking time off, the less productive you will be.
It is important that you use all of your opportunities to recharge and rest. According to Leah Weiss, a business lecturer, and an author, it is wrong to think that working more makes you more productive.
A chief creative officer at Skillsoft, Tara O’Sullivan claims that sleep allows the body to recover and repair itself quickly. So, you need to take that time off and relax. The more you push yourself, the weaker you will become.
It is not worth it to sacrifice your health, especially your mental health.
If you want to be healthy, energetic, and productive, you should take some time off to be with your family and relax, says the instructor in human resource management at the Business University, Katherine Nelson, in Philadelphia.
How Can You Make It Happen?
It is easy. Working day and night without proper rest can never make you happy. So, once you decide to take the time off, here is what you should do next.
1. Plan Accordingly
Most work cycles have busier and slower periods. Choose the slower one to make sure that you stick to your plan.
2. Stay Committed
Don’t be tempted to cancel your time off and go back to work. Once you start planning there is no going back. Visit the spa, go to a concert, party, or even a sporting event. Whatever makes you happy, do it!
3. Prepare Your Colleagues
Before you take a time off, make sure that your colleagues have everything they need. Set guidelines and make sure there is nothing they can call you for. The moment you take your time off, you won’t need to answer the texts or check the mail.
4. Pick a Colleague People Can Contact When You Are Out
Make sure there is someone who your colleagues can call when you are on a vacation. This way, they won’t have the need to contact you.
5. Trust Your Colleagues
Everything will be fine while you are on a vacation. You might think you are indispensable, but that is not true. Trust your colleagues and believe in them. This way you will have a stress-free vacation.
I’ve Taken a Day Off, Now What?!
Do what you haven’t done in a long time. Go travel. Visit places you have never seen. Ask yourself what is it that you truly want to do. Do, whatever makes you feel happy. Don’t just spend your entire vacation at home sleeping.
If you have children, spend some time with them. Take them to the zoo, a game, or any place they might like. Remember, life can be fantastic, especially if you live outside of work.
There is a completely different perspective on life, but only if we are willing to see it. Life outside of work can be truly wonderful. You just have to be inspired to do something fun for a change.
