Science confirms that vitamin D provides many benefits to your physical and mental health

Vitamin D is not really a vitamin, despite of its name. It is a very powerful neuroregulatory steroidal hormone, which is responsible for a number of health benefits. According to the researchers, the best way to optimize the levels of this vitamin in your body, is to get an appropriate sun exposure. During winter, you should use UVB light, because it is scientifically proven that UV rays also offer numerous health benefits. And finally, you can ingest this vitamin through your diet.

The magnetic ballasts are one of the biggest flaws of the standard tanning beds. What’s more, the bulbs can contain light that will make you look tanned, but it will not raise the levels of vitamin D.

The UVB exposure from the artificial lights or from the sun will produce a compound that will reduce the levels of blood sugar, called nitric oxide.

The deficiency of vitamin D is considered to be the main reason for multiple health problems, and when in optimal levels, it will reduce the risk of death by 50%. It actually affects 3000 of the 24 000 genes in the human body.

Vitamin D can regulate the ability to fight chronic inflammation and infections and it produces 200 anti-microbial peptides. Among those is the one called cathelicidin, which is essentially a natural antibiotic.

Orthomolecular Medicine’s January 2013 press release states that, there is nearly 34,000 medical papers worth of research, on vitamin D and the health benefits that it brings to our overall health.

According to those researches, vitamin D is very helpful in cases of:

  • Viral and bacterial infections
  • Alzheimer’s, autism and other brain dysfunction
  • Type 1 and 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease and stroke
  • Pregnancy outcomes (lower risk of pre-eclampsia and C-section)

Studies also suggest that this vitamin can improve diabetes, depression and can treat the pain caused by Crohn’s disease and breast cancer.

According to the researchers, increasing the levels of vitamin D can improve the symptoms of Crohn’s disease. Patients were also found to have a reduced serum vitamin D levels.

Scientists also found out that supplementation of vitamin D can lower the depression and pain in women suffering from diabetes. They conducted a study where the participants were given a 50,000 IU vitamin D2 supplements each week for six months. As the six-month mark drew near, the depression levels in those women were drastically lowered.

Todd Doyle, was the lead researcher of this study and he said that this kind of treatment is very promising and it will treat depression and pain in patients with type 2 diabetes.

However, you need to choose D3 instead of D2, because in the long run it will do more harm to the body than good.

Doctors often prescribe Drisdol, which is a synthetic form of D2 vitamin, and it is far from D3, which is the type of vitamin that the human body produces when exposed to the sun.

A study was conducted, in order to see the differences between the two vitamin D variations, and the participants were divided into two groups. There were big differences between the two groups.

  • The group that used D2 had an increased risk of death by 2%
  • The group that used D3 had a decreased risk of death by 6%

This is a strong indicator of the importance of vitamin D, when it comes to the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Researchers are also adamant that vitamin D is very efficient in preventing different forms of cancer like breast, ovarian, skin, pancreatic and prostate cancers.

The American Journal of Preventive Medicine, found out that a serum 25(OH)D, can lead to 50% lower risk of colorectal cancer. They published that in their study in 2007.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition conducted a study that lasted for four years. They found out that the women who received 1,450mg of calcium and 1,100 IU of vitamin D every day, had a cancer survival rate of 77 percent.

Carole Baggerly is the founder of GrassrootsHealth, and she says that more than 90% of the ordinary cases of breast cancer are as a result of vitamin D deficiency.

For these scientifically proven facts, make sure that you enjoy the sun whenever you can, and take supplements. Also, test the levels of your vitamin D serum level. Take the tests at your lowest point (February) and at your highest point (August).

It is scientifically proven that vitamin D is essential when it comes to the prevention of many diseases, because it affects 3,000 genes in the human body. Maintain optimized levels of D vitamin, and if you manage to do that, you can successfully prevent 16 different cancer types.
